Today was a work day for Francine, and I continue to be on study/vacation. I'm having a little trouble organizing myself, so I've stuck to mostly reading so far. I may have bitten off more than I might actually be able to chew, but that's another story.

| Campeche letters (& Francine with her new hat) on its Malecón |
We started the day in Campeche and took the bus back to Mérida. The trip from the hotel to the bus station was too far to walk, so we grabbed a cab. This was only the second time we'd been in car since arriving in México; the first was a few days before on Sunday when we took a cab for the same trip, only in reverse. Whereas the first cab was very calm and in reasonably good repair, this one was neither. To make matters even more noteworthy, there was a broken down bus that was making a mess of things. Even with all that, the horns were at a minimum and people were for the most part, patient.

All-in-all, Campeche might be more Francine's speed, and the presence of the ocean is a nice touch. On the bus tour, they brought us through three of the five neighborhoods in the walled city. Despite the tour guide's claims to the contrary and despite the neighborhoods each being built in different times, the differences between them were pretty hard to pick up by the untrained observer.
Another interesting pattern (or non-pattern) is that it seems that nearly nobody smokes. Between the two of us, we've noticed only three people smoking so far. Three. That's all. Also, there seems to be either a ban or just a recognized futility in advertising cigarettes - we haven't seen a single cigarette advertisement since we've been here.
And so ends day eight.
